What happens when a dragon shifter chooses a fae for his mate? Magic Fire!

My jaw dropped before I could stop it. I seemed to have stumbled upon a grand hall of sorts, like the kind dwarves would burrow deep into a mountain’s core. The ceiling shot up at least a hundred feet above, revealing an opening from which one could see the stars, beautiful and twinkling and beckoning me forth.
And in the middle of it all, a man sat on a log in front of a healthy fire, roasting something on the end of a stick. I crossed my arms and straightened up, feeling his presence so profoundly and so suddenly that it actually took my breath away—not that I’d let it show, of course. No human could throw me so off-balance, yet he wasn’t a supernatural like me.
I inhaled softly. Not like a werewolf breathing in the scent of its prey, but like a snake who flicks its tongue out for just a second to taste the air.
Shifter. The word flashed through my mind when his head snapped up, eyes darting in my direction. He must have scented me when I let my guard drop, so startled to find a shifter in our fairy wards that I momentarily forgot myself.
Fuck it. No sense hiding now. We both knew the other was there.
“Hey,” he barked, shooting to his feet and marching around his bonfire. Attractive shifter that he was… I couldn’t stop myself from skimming his muscular figure, made more prominent by the fact that he was shirtless and totally ripped.
Chestnut brown hair, tousled and thick—begging for someone to run their fingers through and tame it. A chiseled jaw and light eyes: gray, if I wasn’t mistaken, and beautiful. Oh, and a six pack that probably made human women weep at first sight, with a tantalizing V-cut guiding my gaze down to the low-hanging waistline of his olive-green sweatpants. Yum. Yum times a thousand.
“What are you doing here?” he demanded, handsome face contorted somewhere between surprised and annoyed. I could deal with that. The shifter raised his stick between us, maybe to intimidate, but the now obvious marshmallow on the end was on fire. It bubbled up as I stared at it, my eyebrows shooting up, as it finally fell off and landed on the floor of the cave with an oddly satisfying splat.
I looked up, biting back a grin. “Wow. Terrifying.”
“Yeah, well…” He tossed the stick back toward his happy little bonfire. “I don’t need a weapon to throw you on your ass. Answer the question.”
“No need to be rude, shifter,” I fired back, temper prickling at the thinly veiled threat. Arms still crossed, I stepped out of the shadows completely and into the cave, noting the flash surprise, this time surpassing the annoyance that I called him out. Surely he could sense me too. “My sisters and I are camping at the base of the mountain. I…” I swallowed hard. “I couldn’t sleep and went wandering. No foul intentions, I swear.”
I raised my hands innocently. Lying had never come easily to me, or to most fae. We preferred to play with our words, saying one thing and meaning another, but not outright lying. And this wasn’t a lie. Just not the whole truth.

Featuring Carolyn LaRoche: Daisies in the Outfield and Dandelion Wishes

Carolyn LaRoche grew up in snow country but fled the cold and ice several years ago. She now lives near the beach with her husband and their two sons. She’s been known to lug her laptop to the baseball fields and keeps a notebook by her bed to jot down the next big story idea in the wee hours of the night. Facebook Blog Goodreads Twitter Amazon

Daisies in the Outfield

After his professional baseball career crashed and burned, Jamie escaped to the scenic coastal town of Falmouth for a fresh start. With a new career that fit his personality, Jamie lived life on his terms. His terms were simple—fight fires for the adrenaline rush, coaching MLB hopefuls for the love of the game, and spending his nights with one of the many pretty faces that crossed his path. Plenty of women passed through his life but none had tempted him to settle down. Until a feisty brunette changed all that. Too bad the sexy paramedic had no interest in Jamie or spending the night with him. She carried an attitude as thick as her New York accent and he wanted to coax a smile on her face.Mandy was running from something and Jamie couldn’t help but be intrigued. Can a sexy little wager convince a confirmed bachelor and a woman running from her past to take a chance on love? Goodreads Amazon US Amazon UK Amazon CA Amazon AU iTunes Nook Dandelion Wishes

When a terrible injury ended his pro career, Grant knew nothing would ever take the place of his one and only love—baseball. Fighting fires didn’t hold the same kind of excitement as catching a ninety mile an hour fast ball at Fenway Park but he loved every minute of it. Especially when he met the sassy, sexy as hell paramedic that’s as complicated as a three-alarm fire. Callie had already lived through her fair share of serious. At twenty-eight, her current plans for the future included having a good time and enjoying the MLB hopefuls that showed up on the Cape every May to play in the summer baseball league. College boys were fun but didn't hold half the appeal as the sexy firefighter that kept showing up when she least expected it. He wanted her and she wanted absolutely none of it. Or, so she thought. Grant could not only set her body on fire with just a look but with only a few kisses she started to forget that serious was off the table for her life. After hiding so much for so long, can she open her heart up and trust that Grant’s in it for more than just the chase? Goodreads Amazon US Amazon UK Amazon CA Amazon AU Barnes & Noble iTunes

How did you start writing erotic romance? I started writing crime and mysteries but somehow my main characters always seemed to end up hot for each other! So, now I write with the intent of them becoming romantically involved.

Plotter or pantster? …….. I always attempt to plot but who am I kidding? Pantster all the way.

What are three things you have on your writing desk? Because my office is currently serving as storage for some reorganization in our house, the dining room table is my acting desk. It has a bottle of Dark Kiss body cream from Bath and Body works (my absolute favorite scent!). a huge stack of papers I am attempting to sort through and a canister “Flarp” noise making putty my son left here.
Favorite food? Anything version of Mexican food. Fajitas, chimichangas, burritos…I love it all and could eat it every single day.

Tell us a little about your new release. What character in the book really spoke to you? This series is meant to be an easy summer beach read- fun, sexy and quick. I like Jamie in the first book because he starts out as the usual play boy, ladies man who thinks every woman is ready to drop her panties for him just because he smiles at her. Mandy makes him work for it a little though and he has to re-evalute himself quite a bit.

I write because ____ I love to tell stories. I have a crazy imagination and the more I write fiction, the more active it gets!

What is your favorite type of character to write about? … I like to write strong female characters. They can be a little bit needy in one area but in general I want a heroine who can hold her own in any relationship and is completely independent prior to falling in love. It bothers me when a woman bases all her self worth on whatever man is in her life. A good, solid relationship is give and take.

What is the sexiest scene you ever wrote? I just finished one in a currently unpublished story where the main characters are so sexually attracted to each other even a simple conversation has them panting. The first time they are together, they christen the top of his bar and then the glass of the door to the balcony of his penthouse.

What advice would you give new authors in the erotica/romance field? Find your voice and then find your audience. It’s hard to write something you don’t believe in and make it any kind of success. If you find your own unique voice you will be excited to bring it to people. But, you still need to do your research. Know who you are writing for and go after that audience.

What is next on your writerly horizon? I’m going to spend some time writing a collection of short stories and novellas that cater to women with busy schedules. Not everyone has time to read a full length novel. A lot of women want to read something short and sweet (or steamy!) at night before they go to bed without having to read all night to get to the end.

An Excerpt from Daisies in the Outfield "Come on, Sally, when's dinner gonna be served?" All the guys had a girl name for their night on kitchen duty. Jamie's was Sally. Grant had been harassing him big time and it was getting way beyond annoying. Every time the door to the house opened, he held his breath hoping Mandy would walk in. "You'll get your food when it's ready," he snapped, not bothering to hide his annoyance. "Touchy today, aren’t we. Is it your time of the month, Sally?" "Go to hell." Jamie stirred the sauce then poured the five pounds of pasta into the oversized colander to drain it. "Damn, man. You need to get laid something serious." "You might not understand this, but there is more to life than getting laid and getting drunk." "Tell that to my liver and my dick. They are pretty feisty little guys and they want what they want when they want it." "You really need a life, Grant." "I have a great life. A job I like, a twenty four hour grocery store across the street and plenty of pretty ladies around town with a thing for firefighters." "Why don't you and your dick go tell the guys grub's on. I need to step outside for some air." "Thinking about my parts got you all hot and bothered, does it?" Grant left the kitchen laughing and Jamie stepped out the back door to the little grassy area behind the fire station. Stretching, he let the cool ocean breeze that always accompanied nightfall, wash over him. The smell of sand and salt assaulted his senses. It was a heady combination on a warm summer night. Even better if he had a certain woman in his arms watching the waves crash in over their toes. "Hey," a voice called out quietly from the dimness of dusk. A very familiar voice. A voice that made his heart jump around wildly in his chest. Mandy. He turned around and saw her standing at the corner of the building, peering at him with an amused look on her face. Suddenly feeling a little shy, he replied, "Hey, yourself," instead of striding over and taking her in his arms like he had ached to do all day long. Mandy giggled and twisted her hands in front of her. "What's so funny?" "Well, I came here to meet a guy named Jamie but it looks like I've found Betty Crocker instead.” Oh, shit. The apron! "You got a problem with a man in an apron?" He grinned and she laughed again, shaking her head. "No. I don’t suppose I do." "Good." This time he did close the distance between them but he didn’t touch her. She shivered a little and he hoped it was because of his proximity and not the evening breeze. "It's a house joke. The guy on kitchen duty has to wear one—the frillier, the better—and he gets a girl name. Hazing at its best, I suppose." "What's yours?" "My what?" It was getting hard to think when all he could focus on was her lips and how badly he wanted to taste them. Mandy ran a finger lightly up his arm until she reached the place where the full length apron started up around his neck and hooked her finger there. "Your girl name. What is it?" "Sally." "Hmmm…I've always had this secret fantasy of kissing a girl named Sally. Ever since I heard the song Mustang Sally." "You have? Maybe we should do something about that." "Maybe we should." Mandy was more relaxed than he had seen her over the last few days, flirting with her words and ravaging him with her eyes. He sure liked this side of her. Jamie bent down and scooped her up in his arms. Mandy wrapped her legs around his waist and her arms around his neck. She leaned back slightly and murmured, "Oh, Sally. You have the most amazing—eyes." She ran her tongue over her lips, never once looking him the eyes. "So do you," he replied focused only on those now slightly dampened lips. The space between them disappeared as she took his mouth with a passion he wouldn't have thought her capable of. Worried one of the guys might walk outside and see them, he carried her into a stand of pine trees on the side of the building, never once breaking their contact. She let a tiny little moan escape as she ended the kiss. "I'm sorry. I couldn't help myself." She sounded embarrassed. "I never want you to not do that if you have the urge. Did that even make sense?" He chuckled huskily against her throat as he placed tiny little kisses across the neck line of her top. The thin, silky material was erotic, caressing his chin and cheek as he explored the bare skin of her shoulder with his tongue. "Yes. It made sense." She pulled his mouth back up to hers. "I feel like doing it again." Jamie dropped to his knees, setting Mandy gently onto the ground. He sat in the cushion of the pine needles and pulled her onto his lap. "Then by all means—" The second kiss was better than the first as his tongue sought hers. She was as fervent as he was in her desire to get as close as possible. If he weren't in uniform, twenty feet from ten other guys, he would have given into her every demand. As it was, they were about to go to a place he wouldn't return from without an ice cold shower so he pulled back reluctantly. "Did I miss something?" he whispered against her ear. "No. Why?" "This morning I wasn't sure I would ever see you again. I mean, there was something—" "I know. I'm sorry. I was having some doubts but then I talked to Callie and worked a few things out." "I like when you talk to Callie." He grinned and pressed a kiss to the side of her neck, behind her ear. "Can you talk to her more often? Preferably on a day when I am not on duty?" Mandy laughed. "I think that can be arranged." "Are you hungry?" She shook her head. "Not anymore." There was no mistaking the meaning in her words. "Yeah, me either. Unfortunately, I have to get back inside. The captain can be a bit of a ball-buster." Mandy moved to stand but Jamie pulled her back in, crushing his lips to hers in one last hard kiss. He wanted to remember the feel of her lips all night long. She snaked her arms around his neck and murmured, "I know exactly what you mean." His hands slid up her back slowly, slipping under the hem of her top and finding the soft skin of her lower back. A groan rumbled through his chest. Frustration mounted and that ice cold shower was definitely about to become reality. "I should go," she whispered. "I don’t want you to get in trouble on my account. I'm thinking you are going to need those balls your captain will want to bust in the near future." He groaned again, this time in sweet agony over the image her words had conjured in his mind. They walked out of the stand of trees hand in hand, Jamie cursing his need to be employed. "Are you sure you don’t want to come in for a bit?" She shook her head. "No. I don't want to get in the way." "You are never in my way." He loved the way all her skin, not just her face, changed colors when she was embarrassed. Half the time he said stuff like that just to make her blush. "See you for the game tomorrow night?" he asked, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her in for one last kiss. "Wouldn't miss it for the world, Coach." She batted her eyelashes exaggeratedly and gave him a sugary sweet smile. "Good. I'll make sure one of my uniforms is clean just for you." "You can but you'll be wasting your time." Mandy stepped away and gave a little wave. "I never lose a bet. Enjoy the rest of your shift." He watched as she walked away, stopping just before she turned the corner and blew him a little kiss. What the hell was all that? That was a side to Mandy, he hadn't expected. All her temperature changes over the past few days hadn't prepared him for what had just gone down. The door opened behind him. "Where the hell'd you get off to, man? I was about to call in search and rescue." "Nowhere. I've been out here the whole time." "You've got dirt on your knees." "I dropped something." "And found it by rolling around under the trees?" Grant reached up and pulled a pine needle out of Jamie's hair. "I guess so." "You look like a freak in that apron." "Mandy likes it." Grant's eyes widened as he scanned the area. "She's here?" "Was. I invited her for dinner." "Well, why didn't you all come inside then?" Jamie turned and grinned at his friend. "Because she skipped the meal and filled up on desert." "You dog! You didn't—?" "No! Not that. I would have but you know, work and all." "Always getting in the way of the good stuff," Grant grumbled as they returned to the kitchen. "If I could get paid for having sex, I would." "You can. But, you can also get arrested for it." "I meant legally, you ass hat! Maybe I'll become a porn star." He gyrated his hips exaggeratedly, making Jamie laugh. Jamie pulled off his apron and tossed it to Grant. "Sorry, dude. You better stick with fighting fires. You're on cleanup. I need a shower." A very, very cold shower.

Who do you trust when you learn those you trusted lied to you?

Everyday immortal Bree Brigand gets a rude awakening as her family is slaughtered. Not only is the cursed, suicide blade of legend and lore real, but it has chosen her. She must quickly learn to fast-track a course she’s never navigated, in a world she thought only existed in campfire stories. But, only after coming to terms with the facts…her family is not her family.

Truths and lies collide in a world where the hunters and the hunted trade places faster than she can discern who is which, and everyone is an assassin. Can she find and claim her destiny? Or, will being marked by a male who is not her one true mate ruin everything, and clip this dragon’s wings before she can become all she is meant to be?

I was shaking with rage, but dropped my voice to a whisper. “What do you mean, these are the assassins? What am I then, a spring lamb for the slaughter? Why would you bring me here?”
The next sound that came from her lips was something between a cackle of laughter, a sigh of exhaustion, and an odd bark. “Because Asa, in this world, everyone is an assassin. The difference between them, is which side they are on, who they work for, and if the price or prize is worth the risk. Right now, you are not a prize here. The safest place for you to be, is in plain sight, able to identify others. Out there,” her head jerked backward over her shoulder, “you’re the unknown, you’re the rogue, and you’re the potential pawn in a game you don’t know that you’re playing. Now that you’ve tripped into this world, and all but announced your presence, the only option to keep you safe, is to expose your throat while looking them in the eye, which simultaneously exposes theirs.” She reasoned.
“That’s insane.” I hissed.
“That’s the world you were born to. Your parents knew it. What they didn’t know, was when they became the target. I choose to think that if they had known, or had even the slightest indication, you would not have been conceived. But, they are gone, and here you are. I thought I had succeeded in keeping you from this world. I was wrong.”
“So you are saying that my parents were assassins too?”
“Hear me clearly. You come from a long line of assassins. Your world now is filled with them. Trust no one. You will be safe until the time you are not. Do you still think it was so wise to come here?” She challenged with her hand on her hip.
I was dumbfounded. Why in the world would my mother have told me to remember and find this? Surely she must have known. It made no sense. “Did they know?”
“Who?”
“The Brigands?”

Dragons are my favorite mythical creatures. When I was a kid, I spent long hours imagining what it would be like to own a pet dragon and fly over the clouds, looking at the world from above. I’ve read countless books about dragons, and I never seem to have enough of those stories. From fantasy to steamy paranormal, if there is a dragon, I will read it. There is a sense of freedom I experience any time I find a good dragon novel that leaves me at peace with the world. The sheer power, and at the same time grace and elegance, of such creature when combined with a shifter is an explosive union, and it gives an author plenty of opportunities to write an epic story. When I introduced Dragon Sol in the Fifth Moon’s Tales, all I wanted was a badass sidekick for my werewolf, but Dragon’s character grew sentence by sentence, acquiring all the traits typical of its namesake: loyalty, strength, charm, wittiness. Soon, I couldn’t deny him the story he demanded any longer, and I finally gave in and started writing The Fifth Moon’s Dragon. In the process, I realized that I’ve never truly forgotten my dream as a child. I still want a pet dragon, especially if he comes in the shape of a hunk shape shifter. Monica La Porta is the Author of The Fifth Moon’s Dragon. You can find out more about Monica here!

The High Lord of Solaria, Dragon Sol has recently returned to his planet to marry his two promised brides, but instead of savoring the pleasures of his wedding night, he finds himself fighting an enigmatic assassin sent to kill him. A skilled mercenary, Jade belongs to the Assassin Academy and lives for the thrill of the chase, but her latest mission goes awry since the moment she throws that first arrow at her intended target. Dragon proves to be Jade’s worthiest opponent yet, and what starts as any other mission becomes so much more, reversing the roles of hunter and prey. Before either of them can stop the inevitable, a deep connection take roots until their hearts and not their lives are at stakes.

“What I mean is—” He stepped closer, running his hand down her bare arm.
Sunshine and summer heat didn’t prevent goosebumps breaking out over her skin. He stood close enough that if either of them inhaled deeply their chests would touch.
“You’ll be around for while.”
Her breath caught and she licked her lips.
Lucius mirrored her and bent slightly. For a second, she thought he’d kiss her and she closed her eyes both to imagine that and encourage him to do it.
“Because—” Her eyes popped open and she held back disappointment, only just. “There’s a mid-summer festival on the twenty second. Everyone will be there and you should come, too.”
“With you?” Had she said that or just thought it?
“If you’d like.” His hands played with her fingers and scarf caught between them. “What do I owe you?” He pulled the cloth free, letting it flutter toward the counter.
Rev gave herself a shake and rounded the counter to open the classic register. It couldn’t do more than hold cash, but it fit the shop too well to replace. She also pulled out an IPad and found the scarves in the inventory Dad had helped build for Grandma. She changed the stock quantity from eleven to a ten and looked at the price.
“Twenty dollars. Tax included. Do you have cash?” she asked, her finger hovering over the button to release the drawer.
“Yep.” Lucius passed over a twenty as well as a card with his phone number. “Let me know if you want a tour of Littleton, or, y’know, something else.” His grin was like the sun, bright and warm, blinding and melting. In an attempt to save herself from one or both, she forced herself to look at the scarf and folded it, placing it in a box.
Eventually, she had to meet his eyes again; eyes as sultry as the July day. He wouldn’t have to do much to charm her out of her panties—Pants! Her pants. Heat flaring in her cheeks, she broke eye contact. “Yeah. I’ll call you.”
“Thanks.”
Oddly enraptured by this stranger’s pull on her, she watching him, his strong back, tight bottom, as he sauntered his way back out the glass door with a resounding tinkle of the chimes.
Rev watched through the door as Lucius encountered another man of similar age and coloring outside the store. He even had the same tattoos on his arms. Both men were on their toes, leaning forward and Lucius clenched his empty hand into a fist.
The other man turned from Lucius to look through the glass straight at her and Rev froze in place. He had brown eyes, too, but dark, deep and cold. Dark hair cut short, this man had more curls than Lucius and his jaw was darker, shadows of stubble beneath his nose and mouth.
Looking back to Lucius, he shook a finger at him, said one last thing, and walked away. Lucius’ smile was gone, his brow furrowed as he turned and headed in the other direction.
Rev spent the next hour playing Candy Crush and trying to decide if the two were family or not. Her game was interrupted by another call from Grandma.
“Aren’t you supposed to be in surgery?”
“Aren’t you supposed to mind your elders? You’re already in the pot from that last call. You’re only turning up the heat. Now, who came in and what did they buy?”
Rev’s sigh would be clear to her Grandmother. “A guy, Lucius. He came to get a birthday present for his mom. He took one of the scarves.”
“Lucius? Lucius Clearwater? Young thing, big smile?”
“Um, yes. He’s my age.”
“Good Lord, is he eighteen already? Yes, yes, I’m nearly done. You can wheel me out in a minute.”
“Grandma! Get off the phone!”
“Fine. But, Rev, Lacy Clearwater’s birthday is in October.”
“Really? Does Lucius have a brother?”
The phone disconnected but not before Rev heard the nurse trying to take it away. She almost pitied the woman.
How would she find out who the other man was? The card with Lucius’ number was still on the counter. She had a good idea why he’d be buying a gift in July for a birthday in October. She was flattered and interested in getting to know Lucius better.
“Clearwater…” After searching online for Lucius Clearwater and finding beautiful, hilarious, and adorable photos as old as five years, she was pretty sure he was a hometown guy who loved his family.
Dark Eyes, for lack of a better name, showed up in several of the family photos, but he was untagged, giving her no indication of their relation or his name.
In any case, she would be calling Lucius. Spending the night alone at Grandma’s wasn’t exactly grabbing her imagination.

I don't have a "favorite" mythical creature. There are, however, those I am interested in, one being the Skinwalkers of Native American lore. For some reason people think that Skinwalkers belong only to Navajo folklore, however that is not true. Most have some version of the Skinwalker, including my own ancestors. Navajo are just the ones who get all the press.

The consensus is that Skinwalkers are evil shamans (or witches) capable of changing their shape to that of various animals. Depending on the tale being stretched around a campfire, they can change shape at will, change shape only to those animals they have killed and eaten or are those who can don the skin of other creatures and take on their characteristics. The latter are of particular interest to me as villains. The ability to kill and impersonate another human is far more frightening to me than appearing as a wolf or bear. Disinformation and betrayal is what destroyed much of Native American culture to begin with, and impersonating a friend or loved one is the easiest way to betray someone.
I find the idea of magical transformation to be fascinating, and many of my villains are capable of such a feat, often in the most gruesome way possible. Many of my most memorable villains eat human hearts, skin their victims alive or pluck out their eyes and devour their souls. Think about that the next time someone you care about seems to be being weird and tell me it doesn't give you the creeps.

Teenage girls are going missing in the St Louis area only to reappear sliced into bloody, unrecognizable ribbons dropped along a lonely stretch of highway, leaving parents in a state of panic and the police baffled. Twin monster hunters, Jynx and Piper Kane, take the terrifying case, digging in where angels fear to tread in hopes of finding a link to the lycan clan that turned their brother and destroyed their family.

As clue after gory clue leads deeper into the darkness that lies just beyond the glow of the city Jynx and Piper find themselves facing a terror like nothing they've hunted before. Something with no fear and no remorse.

It's out there in the dark... and it's looking for Fresh Blood.
